Plastic Wet Wipes Ban: Is Your Bathroom Cupboard Ready?

That is now set to change.

Newly updated Welsh Government guidance confirms that, from 18 December 2026, businesses will no longer be allowed to sell or supply single-use wet wipes containing plastic to consumers in Wales.

The ban covers a wide range of everyday products, including baby wipes, antibacterial hand wipes, household cleaning wipes, personal hygiene wipes and moist toilet tissue. It applies to products sold both in shops and online.

For consumers and businesses alike, it is an important reminder to look beyond the front of the packet and ask a simple question: what is the wipe itself actually made from?

Why Are Plastic Wet Wipes Being Banned?

Traditional wet wipes are often made using synthetic fibres such as polyester or polypropylene. Although they may feel similar to tissue, these plastic fibres do not break down in the same way.

When wipes are flushed, dropped as litter or disposed of incorrectly, they can contribute to sewer blockages, plastic pollution and damage to rivers and marine environments.

The Welsh Government states that the new law is intended to reduce the environmental harm caused when plastic-containing wipes are disposed of incorrectly.

The rest of the UK will follow with similar restrictions:

• Wales: 18 December 2026

• Northern Ireland: 18 May 2027

• England: 19 May 2027

• Scotland: 11 August 2027

Although the dates differ, the direction is clear: plastic-free wet wipes are quickly becoming the new standard.

What Does the Wet Wipes Ban Mean for Consumers?

Once the ban takes effect, consumers in Wales should no longer be offered wet wipes containing plastic, whether they are purchasing them online or in person.

Plastic-free and reusable wet wipes are not included in the ban. Certain products designed specifically for medical care or treatment will also be exempt.

However, “biodegradable” and “plastic-free” do not automatically mean “flushable”. Unless a wipe is specifically certified and clearly labelled as suitable for flushing, it should always be placed in the bin.

This remains one of the simplest ways to help protect drains, sewers and waterways.

What Should Businesses Do Before the Ban?

Retailers and other businesses supplying wet wipes to consumers should begin reviewing their product ranges now.

The Welsh Government recommends checking whether wipes contain plastic and switching to reusable or plastic-free alternatives before the deadline. Businesses should also ensure that employees understand the changes and know which specialist products may qualify for an exemption.

Acting early can help businesses:
